When I worked in the White House, every time we wanted to do something on an issue like Congo or Rwanda, we'd turn around and hope that citizens across the country were going to push our issue forward, but there was nothing but a big, big silence. So what we need, all over this country, is people who are willing to stand up and make noise whenever there is a situation that demands the United States attention and our action. Until we create out of the bones of this Darfur movement a permanent anti-genocide constituency that is willing to demand that our government stands up against these crimes, until we do that we are just going to keep reacting ad hoc over and over again. STAND has the potential to build that structure. It is exciting, and an honor, to be a part of STAND's work.
