Apply

From the beginning, STAND has always been student-led, not only at the campus level but also at the national level. We are currently accepting applications from currently enrolled high school and college students for the 2013-2014 national leadership team. STAND offers two types of national leadership positions: Managing Committee positions, and Task Force positions. The Managing Committee is responsible for developing STAND's national advocacy campaigns, crafting our public brand and messaging, and coordinating our grassroots outreach efforts. Task Force members work with the Managing Committee to develop resources for our grassroots members, help with policy analysis, and provide support to other crucial day-to-day functions. 2013-2014 Managing Committee and Task Force members will serve from June 2013 through May 2014

Applications for the following Managing Committee positions are due May 15: Campaigns Coordinator, National Outreach Coordinator, and Regional Organizer. Applications for other Managing Committee positions are now closed. Applications for 2013-2014 Task Force positions will be accepted and evaluated on a rolling basis throughout the summer of 2013. Please email info@standnow.org for additional information.

It is important to note that serving on the Managing Committee or on a Task Force is, first and foremost, a learning experience. We are not looking for people who are already experts; we are looking for students who are passionate about the anti-genocide movement and willing to question past approaches, try new things, and, most importantly, learn by doing. If this describes you, there's a place for you on the Managing Committee or on a Task Force. You will be well-trained in the skills necessary to excel at your position. Applicants for the Managing Committee must be located in the U.S., but aside from that there are no location requirements; our national leadership team works remotely through daily email conversations, weekly conference calls, and periodic in-person retreats. Position-specific qualifications are listed on each application, but in general, here's what we look for in applicants for national leadership positions:

  • Passion for and dedication to the atrocities prevention movement
  • Enrollment as a high school or college student for the 2013-2014 academic year
  • Ability to remain in the position for the entire 2013-2014 academic year: exceptions can be made for certain circumstances (e.g. study abroad plans), but as a general rule we strongly prefer that MC and Task Force members remain in their positions for the entire year
  • Strong time management and personal organization skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to consistently devote a significant amount of time (10-15 hours per week for Managing Committee positions, 3-5 hours per week for Task Force positions unless otherwise noted) during the school year
  • Previous leadership experience in a STAND chapter is helpful for some positions (particularly Student Director, National Outreach Coordinator, and Regional Organizer), but not required

As a member of the 2013-2014 leadership team, you'll play a key role in shaping the future of STAND for years to come. As a newly independent organization, STAND has the opportunity and the challenge to re-envision its organizational model and long-term strategic plan, and you'll participate fully in these exciting and important conversations. The incoming Managing Committee and Task Forces will build upon the work begun by the 2012-2013 leadership team to transition STAND into a new era as a sustainable, student-led organization.

STAND Managing Committee Positions

The Managing Committee is STAND's primary coordinating and decision-making body, responsible for formulating and implementing our campaigns, policy priorities, and overall strategic direction. MC positions require 10-15 hours per week of work. If you have questions about any of these positions, or about the status of your application, feel free to email info@standnow.org. Don't forget to also check out our available Task Force positions.

National Outreach Coordinator

As the “Chief of Staff,” so to speak, to the team of Regional Organizers, the National Outreach Coordinator ensures that the outreach side of the Managing Committee operates smoothly. As NOC, you’ll be the point person for drafting weekly regional newsletters, developing outreach strategies for national campaigns, and helping ROs develop and implement their regional field plans. You’ll touch base with each RO on a weekly basis to stay up to date on the “state of the field,” and work with every other MC member to ensure that the needs of the outreach team, and of our grassroots members, are reflected in every decision. Applications for the NOC position are due May 15.

Regional Organizer

STAND can have the most well-informed Education Coordinator, the wonkiest Policy Coordinator, and the most creative Campaigns Coordinator to ever walk the face of the earth...but none of it would mean anything without our Regional Organizers. As a RO, you’ll be responsible for maintaining, expanding, and tracking our most important resource: our grassroots network. You’ll promote STAND’s national programming to our existing chapters, but you’ll also do so much more than that. You’ll grow your regional network by strategically engaging existing student human rights constituencies on campuses where STAND does not currently have a presence, and leverage national campaign opportunities to turn contacts into fully-engaged members of the student atrocities prevention movement. You’ll serve as the all-important voice of STAND’s membership on the Managing Committee, ensuring that our campaigns and resources meet the needs and interests of our members. You yourself will serve as an important resource to STAND members in your region, using your own organizing experience to be a mentor, guide, and sounding board. Last, but certainly not least, you will closely track the growth of your regional network by tracking clearly-defined quantitative metrics and qualitative benchmarks related to chapter leadership development, participation in national campaigns, and degree of engagement. If all of this sounds intimidating, don’t worry; you’ll be well-trained. If you’re a good listener, are willing to speak your mind when necessary, and have experience as an active chapter leader or member, you have what it takes to be a great Regional Organizer! Applications for Regional Organizer positions are due May 15.

Campaigns Coordinator

For an advocacy organization like STAND, campaigns serve two purposes: making sure that our constituency of informed, well-trained advocates is being put to good use; and bringing in new members. As the Campaigns Coordinator, you’ll be the one who figures out how to strike that balance. You’ll ensure that the asks identified by the Policy Coordinator translate into a steady stream of action opportunities for all of our members: from those who just joined our mailing list and are wondering how they can do more, to those running well-established chapters. In particular, recognizing that different people are interested in different conflicts, you’ll ensure that we’re consistently offering robust multi-conflict programming; and you’ll consult with our Regional Organizers and Communications team to ensure that our national campaigns are well-tailored to grow the STAND constituency. For each major national campaign, you’ll work with the Student Director and staff to develop a set of measurable benchmarks and goals, an implementation timeline, a set of taskings and deadlines for other MC members, and clear monitoring and accountability mechanisms. Finally, you’ll manage a task force of students focused on creating resources and trainings to help our grassroots members develop key advocacy and organizing skills. You don’t need to be the wonkiest kid in the class to be the Campaigns Coordinator; you do need to be creative, flexible, and open to crazy-sounding ideas. Applications for the Campaigns Coordinator position are due May 15.

National Student Director

As the visible leader of the STAND constituency and the overseer of the Managing Committee, the National Student Director is the person responsible for connecting the dots, putting the pieces of the puzzle together, and [insert preferred metaphor here]. As the SD, you’ll be responsible for facilitating internal MC discussions via email threads and weekly conference calls, coordinating workflows for the implementation of national programming, planning national events (such as MC planning retreats and STAND Camp), and representing STAND at public speaking engagements. Working closely with STAND’s two full-time staffers, you’ll also play a key role in developing relationships with partner organizations, fine-tuning STAND’s strategic plan, and implementing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Applications for the National Student Director position are dueApril 5.

Policy Coordinator

STAND is building a network of informed, committed student advocates. As the Policy Coordinator, you’ll be responsible for figuring out exactly what they should be advocating for. In close collaboration with the Education Coordinator and a team of in-house student conflict analysts, as well as our partner organizations in the atrocities prevention movement, you’ll develop STAND’s official policy “asks” - that is, opportunities for U.S. policy to address our conflicts of concern, whether it’s legislation, a presidential appointment, or support of a Security Council resolution. You’ll then work with the Campaigns Coordinator to turn these policy entry points into accessible, responsible, and well-informed campaigns around which our members can organize. Finally, you’ll work with our team of Regional Organizers to identify states and congressional districts in which more grassroots capacity is needed in order to effectively target the decision-makers we need to influence. Applications for the Policy Coordinator position are due May 1.

Education Coordinator

The Education Coordinator’s most important duty is to ensure that our grassroots student leaders have the resources that they need in order to educate their campuses about STAND’s conflicts of concern. Day-to-day, you’ll compile our famous Weekly News Briefs; create up-to-the-minute one-pagers, PowerPoints, webinars, and other resources requested by our members; and help ensure that our policy asks reflect an informed, nuanced understanding of our conflicts of concern. On a more strategic level, you’ll be the point person for fine-tuning and managing STAND’s conflict selection methodology, helping to ensure that we’re devoting our organizational resources to the most pertinent mass atrocity situations of the day. Sound like a lot? Never fear! You’ll work with the Policy Coordinator to jointly manage a team of student conflict analysts who will help you knock it out of the park. Applications for the Education Coordinator position are due May 1.

Communications Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator holds the ultimate responsibility for getting STAND's message, in all its passionate, wonky, and occasionally mischievous glory, out to local and national audiences. As the Comms Coordinator, you'll handle national media outreach; draft emails to STAND's national list; develop a consistent blogging schedule; track all national and local media coverage of STAND; track the success of our online campaigns by monitoring key social media, web, and email metrics; and work closely with the Campaigns Coordinator to identify opportunities for digital activism and develop talking points, web content, and a communications calendar for all national programming. It's a big job, which is why you'll a) be well-trained, and b) be assisted by a Task Force responsible for managing our social media accounts, creating media outreach resources for chapters, and generating blog content.

Task Force Positions

Each Managing Committee Coordinator oversees a taskforce of relevant support roles. Task Forces are the backbone of STAND, and regularly carry out tasks that are vital to STAND's day to day operations. In general, Task Force positions require 3-5 hours of work per week, unless otherwise noted. We are accepting applications for 2013-2014 Task Force positions on a rolling basis, and the positions will remain open until filled. Interviews for these positions will likely begin in mid-summer, after the transition to the 2013-2014 Managing Committee. If you have questions about any of the positions, or about the status of your application, feel free to email info@standnow.org.

Advocacy Trainer

As the Advocacy Trainer, you’ll be responsible for ensuring that our grassroots members have the skills necessary to effectively pressure key decision-makers, particularly their local Congressional offices. You’ll update our collection of advocacy training materials (including our ever-popular “How to Lobby” guides), and conduct phone, Skype, and webinar trainings with chapters to prepare them for in-district lobby meetings. You may also occasionally assist chapters in setting up in-district lobby meetings. If you’re interested in direct advocacy, legislative policymaking, and helping dedicated student activists around the country realize that “lobbying” is a lot more fun and less scary than it sounds, you’re probably STAND’s next Advocacy Trainer!

Chapter Resource Developer (1 or more positions available)

If you’re a member of a STAND chapter or a similar group on your campus, there have probably been times when you’ve said to yourself, “Boy, I really wish there was a how-to guide for this.” Whether it’s planning a certain type of event, recruiting and retaining members, or raising money, many STAND chapters face the same set of challenges. That’s why we’re working to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date set of reference guides to address basic but common challenges faced by students who are trying to organize sustainable anti-genocide communities on their campuses. For the 2013-2014 school year, we’re looking to hire one or more Chapter Resource Developers who are interested in helping their fellow STAND students become better campus organizers. As a chapter Resource Developer, you’ll help update our existing set of how-to guides, and develop new ones based on what you (based on your own experience and on feedback from the team of Regional Organizers) think chapters would find useful. If you have experience in a STAND chapter or a related campus organization, then you have the expertise necessary to excel in this role.

Digital Media Specialist

As the Digital Media Specialist, you’ll be the owner of STAND’s brand, and your job can be summed up in four words: “Make STAND look cool.” In practice, this can mean anything from formatting materials according to the STAND style guide, to creating shareable graphics (like this one), to putting together a promotional video for a campaign. If your passion for ending genocide is matched only by your interest in graphic design, then this is the position for you.

Social Media Specialist

A strong social media presence is a must for a student-led advocacy organization like STAND. As the Social Media Specialist, you’ll play a key role in maintaining and growing our online reach. You’ll be expected to generate multiple Facebook messages and Tweets on a variety of topics each day, taking the initiative to find and post items (e.g. conflict updates, in-depth articles, infographics, etc.) that our followers will find interesting. You’ll also provide input to other leadership team members on the best way to utilize these platforms for campaigns, and stay up to date on emerging social media platforms with an eye to how STAND might be able to use them to reach new audiences and further our mission. In all of this, you’ll work closely with the Communications Coordinator to ensure that our messaging is consistent across all of our online platforms.

Local Media Specialist

Each year, our chapters hold countless innovative events on their campuses. As the Local Media Specialist, you’ll help them get the media coverage that they deserve. Specifically, you’ll work one-on-one with chapters to help them craft press releases, op-eds, and letters to the editor, and train them to reach out to and interact with reporters. You’ll also update STAND’s inventory of media outreach resources, and develop new resources (e.g. sample press releases or op-eds) related to specific campaigns.

Bloggers (multiple positions available)

STAND relies on a team of student bloggers to generate a steady stream of content for our national blog. As a blogger, you will be expected to submit 350- to 500-word posts to the Communications Coordinator at agreed-upon intervals (generally one post every two weeks), and will have the leeway to write about any topics related to atrocities prevention advocacy that you personally find interesting. If you’re a strong writer and want to generate a solid portfolio of published content while exploring a variety of topics, then there’s a place for you on our 2013-2014 blogging team!

Conflict Education Specialist (4 positions available)

For the 2013-2014 academic year, we’ll be hiring four Conflict Education Specialists (CESs), each focusing on one of the following conflict areas:

  • Sudan and South Sudan
  • Middle East and North Africa (focusing primarily on Syria)
  • Southeast Asia (focusing primarily on Burma)
  • Central Africa (focusing primarily on the DRC)

As a CES, your primary day-to-day duty will be to assist the Education Coordinator with the Weekly News Brief by compiling and summarizing pertinent articles related to mass atrocity situations in your region of focus.

In addition, you, together with a team of Conflict Analysts assigned to your conflict of focus, will form an informal working group that will serve as STAND’s in-house policy and education shop for that conflict. For example, if you’re the Central Africa Education Specialist, you and the Central Africa Analysts would form STAND’s “Central Africa Working Group.” Together, you’ll split up the work of acting as a resource for STAND’s leadership and membership on the conflict(s) in your region of focus: creating educational materials and blog posts on the history, context, and root causes of the conflict(s); researching possible options for U.S. policy to mitigate the conflict(s); and assisting the Managing Committee in developing national campaigns related to the conflict(s).

Important notes:

  • On your application, we will ask you to indicate the region(s) on which you are interested in working. Depending on the number of applications we receive, you may also be evaluated for a Conflict Analyst position focusing on one of the regions in which you indicate interest. In practice, the Conflict Education Specialists and the Conflict Analysts will work closely together, and have similar duties; the primary difference is that each Conflict Education Specialist will specifically be responsible for helping to compile the Weekly News Brief.
  • Although background knowledge is a plus, you do not need to be an “expert” on one of STAND’s conflict areas in order to apply for a Conflict Education Specialist or Conflict Analyst position. If you are a fast learner, are sincerely interested in learning more about a conflict area, and have the research skills necessary to develop a strong understanding of your conflict of focus, you will be a strong candidate. While we’re interested in shaping you into conflict experts, the Conflict Education Specialist/Conflict Analyst experience is also about learning how to research conflicts, inform policy, and shape conflict-specific constituencies.

Weekly time commitment: 3-5 hours

Conflict Analyst (4 or more positions available)

  • Sudan and South Sudan
  • Middle East and North Africa (focusing primarily on Syria)
  • Southeast Asia (focusing primarily on Burma)
  • Central Africa (focusing primarily on the DRC)

Ideally, we’d like to end up with a team of analysts for each conflict: 2-3 Sudan Analysts, 2-3 Middle East Analysts, etc.

Each team of Conflict Analysts, along with the relevant Conflict Education Specialist, will form an informal working group that will serve as STAND’s in-house policy and education shop for that conflict. Together, you’ll split up the work of acting as a resource for STAND’s leadership and membership on the conflict(s) in your region of focus: creating educational materials and blog posts on the history, context, and root causes of the conflict(s); researching possible options for U.S. policy to mitigate the conflict(s); and assisting the Managing Committee in developing national campaigns related to the conflict(s).

Important notes:

  • On your application, we will ask you to indicate the regions(s) on which you are interested in working. Depending on the number of applications we receive, you may also be evaluated for a Conflict Education Specialist position focusing on one of the regions in which you indicate interest.
