About
The Sudanese government has orchestrated brutal violence against its people in multiple regions of the country. In Darfur, the Sudanese army and government-supported militias launched a counterinsurgency over a decade ago that quickly became a genocidal campaign against Darfuri civilians. The Sudanese government has also responded to rebel groups in Blue Nile and South Kordofan states with extensive attacks on civilians. After months of civilian protests beginning at the end of 2018, President Omar al-Bashir was removed from office by the military. However, the military refuses to give power to civilians and recently began attacking civilian protestors, killing over 150 and injuring more than 700, including by raping civilians and burning tents and buildings. The U.S. government should enforce sanctions on the Sudanese government, pressure Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt to reduce their support for the Sudanese government, push for safe and effective delivery of humanitarian aid, ensure an effective peacekeeping presence to protect Sudanese civilians, and work to ensure a peaceful transfer of power to a civilian government.
