The popular hashtag encouraged President Obama to say the name “Rohingya.” In this, he recognized an ethnic group that the Burmese government still fails to recognize. The minority Rohingya Muslim population has faced an onslaught of violence and many have been confined to modern-day concentration camps in the northwestern Rakhine state. However, President Thein Sein of Burma refuses to recognize the existence of the ethnic group, calling them Bengali migrants. Obama said, “Discrimination against the Rohingya does not express the kind of country that Burma wants to be,” during a public visit to Burma.
