National Task Force Positions

STAND's task force members play a key role in planning and implementing STAND's campaigns. By working closely with members of STAND's Managing Committee, Task Force members are an integral part of helping to coordinate STAND's efforts throughout the country!

The following job descriptions offers a brief overview of particular task force positions on STAND's national leadership team.

Advocacy Task Force

We are currently recruiting six Regional Advocacy Coordinators (RACs) to help empower students across the America with the tools they need to effectively advocate to render genocide extinct. Each RAC will be responsible for both communicating with STAND chapters in the region, responding to their questions, alerting them to important pieces of legislation, training them to lobby their elected officials successfully, and implementing the advocacy side of STAND's programming. The time commitment (and nature of the position itself) will vary over the course of the year and week by week. On average, RACS will spend somewhere between two and six hours carrying out their tasks.

Communications Task Force

Regional Media Coordinators
Regional Media Coordinators, or RMCs, will be trained by the Communications Coordinator to help answer all media-help requests for the assigned region. The RMC will also help edit media alerts, press releases, and be responsible for tracking media coverage in their region.

Messaging and Editing Specialist

The Messaging and Editing Specialist will be responsible for editing all STAND materials and messages, from educational one-pagers to conference agendas and action alerts. The Messaging and Editing Specialist will edit for the basics - grammar, spelling, word placement, etc. - as well as for message and style.

Applicants should have grammatical copy editing experience and have skill/interest in assisting STAND in maintaining stylistic and message consistency.

Programming Task Force

Regional Conference Assistants
The Regional Conference Assistants will help plan one of STAND's six regional conferences in the Spring. The RCA will be expected to be one of the primary organizers of the conference, handling all logistical details and planning decisions. The RCA and Regional Conference Coordinator, along with Programming Coordinators, will work hand in hand, making decisions and planning the conferences together.

Campaign Assistants
The Campaign Assistants will plan and help to implement STAND's specific programming initiatives. The Campaign Assistants will be expected to be one of the key organizers of STAND campaigns, helping to provide ideas, feedback, and support to campaigns and Programming Coordinators. The Campaign Assistants and Programming Coordinators will work hand in hand, creating exciting initiatives to energize the work of STAND students across the country. Campaign assistants will be needed on both the college and high school levels.

Genocide Education Task Force

The role of the Genocide Education Task Force is to educate and inform both STAND chapters and the STAND Leadership Team on the backgrounds and current statuses of the conflicts we're focusing on, which range from the genocide in Darfur to the atrocities in East Burma. STAND is looking for a dedicated group of task force members, each of whom will focus on one specific crisis by staying on top of the news and condensing that information into an intelligent and accessible form for our movement. New Chapter Outreach Task Force

The Outreach Team is currently looking for students interested in helping new chapters throughout the country. The New Chapter Outreach Team will work with our New Chapter Outreach Coordinator, Will, to develop new resources for new chapters, find students to start chapters in strategic locations and communicate on a regular basis with new chapters. International Outreach Task Force

STAND, the student-led division of the Genocide Intervention Network, envisions a world in which the international community protects civilians from genocidal violence. At its core, our mission is to empower individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide.

To do so, STAND’s Leadership Team recruits, trains, organizes and mobilizes students around the world by providing materials, educational information, online resources, policy expertise, and a network of concerned and active peers.

Born out of the fight to stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, STAND is devoted to creating a sustainable student network that actively fights genocide wherever it may occur. We seek to unite students around the world in a permanent anti-genocide constituency.

International Outreach Task Force

The International Outreach Task Force (IOTF) Members will be focused on supporting STAND chapters working around the world, and increasing the domestic understanding of and involvement with international STAND. IOTF members will be working on a wide variety of activities to support international chapters, and will work directly with STAND chapter leadership on the ground around the world. Beyond working with international chapters, members of the IOTF will help coordinate American STAND chapter's involvement in international initiatives, such as the Ambassador Program and the International Translation Corps. Members of the IOTF will work closely with the International Outreach Coordinator, helping to provide the resources, information, and any other necessary support to STAND chapters around the globe. Every member of the IOTF will play an important role in the growth of the global anti-genocide movement.

Coordination & Management Duties:

Help organize and implement international STAND conferences
Help foster close relationships with international STAND chapters
Help promote the goals of international STAND to domestic STAND chapters
Help to create and coordinate the International Translation Corps
Assist with formalizing, advertising, and implementing the Ambassador Program

State Outreach Coordinator

A State Outreach Coordinator's job is centered around the needs of new and existing STAND chapters within a specific state or states. Each State Outreach Coordinator will be expected to provide chapters within their states with materials, tools, updates and guidance throughout the year. The State Outreach Coordinator (SOC) and the Regional Outreach Coordinator (ROC) will work hand in hand, ensuring that all STAND chapters in the assigned state or states are fully equipped with the information and resources they need to effectively advocate for an end to the genocide in Darfur.

Management Duties

Work closely with the STAND ROC to help each school develop its chapter, implement STAND's national campaigns, and to create its own initiatives
Assist the ROC with building partnerships between schools in the region
Track chapter progress and follow-up on events and campaigns
Provide support, motivation, and tangible resources to chapters

Coordination Duties

Work with the STAND ROC and other Outreach Committee members to coordinate efforts between colleges, high schools, and communities.
Maintain communication with the ROC and chapters within the assigned state or states via phone calls, e-mails, instant messaging, and face-to-face meetings, when possible.

Accountability Duties

Weekly communication with the STAND ROC
Meet all goals set by the STAND Managing Committee

The Campus-Community Outreach Coordinator

The CCOC serves two very important and evolving purposes on the STAND Leadership Team. The overall aim of the position is to ensure that STAND groups are reaching beyond the STAND network to form effective partnerships with other organizations, both on and off campus. The CCOC will encourage and oversee collaboration and coordination with community organizations (i.e. Save Darfur Coalition chapters). The CCOC would also be given the exciting task of encouraging diversity in the STAND movement by creating strategies to encourage and empower both the STAND SLT and STAND chapters to incorporate a diverse collection of non-STAND student organizations to join in anti-genocide efforts. This is a relatively new position, and the Coordinator will be given the opportunity to develop a short-term and long-term strategy to expand and diversify the student movement; a key component and priority for STAND’s future.

Materials/Communication Duties:

* Create materials to empower STAND chapters to reach out to, coordinate with, and form effective partnerships with non-STAND organizations

* Maintain and update database of Community Partner organizations. A database may also be formed consisting of non-STAND student organizations, including human rights groups, faith-based organizations, and other potentially interested student groups.

* Produce weekly updates on the student movement to be distributed to non-STAND partners

Coordination Duties:

* Work with the Managing Committee to ensure that diversity and community coordination remains a priority and is included in all STAND campaigns

* Work with Outreach Team to ensure that they are empowered to encourage their chapters to reach out to non-STAND organizations both on and off campus

* Serve as a liaison between community organizations and appropriate Outreach Team members to share events and campaigns

* Effectively communicate STAND campaigns and priorities to non-STAND partners

* Work with Programming Team to develop community and diversity efforts into all our programming

* Seeks advice and guidance from Save Darfur Coalition’s Inter-faith Outreach Coordinator.

* Communicate with strong non-STAND partners and Student Director to develop long-term plans to expand the diversity of the movement.

Required Skills:

* Strong communication skills

* Extensive knowledge of the movement to be able to represent STAND to non-STAND groups

* Self-motivation, innovation, and patience as this job will entail developing a new area of the movement

Internships

The Genocide Intervention Network (GI-NET) is changing the way the United States and the international community respond to the world's worst crime by empowering individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. GI-NET's aim is to build the first permanent anti-genocide constituency. Internships are available for undergraduates or recently graduated students who are available for at least 20 to 40 hours per week for at least 2-3 months.

Fall, Winter/Spring and Summer placements are available.

Acceptance to GI-NET's internship program is typically very competitive. In order to give all participants as much time as possible to plan, we have instituted the following application deadlines:

Fall: approximately August/September thru November/December

Application Deadline: July 1
You should receive notification by August 15

Winter/Spring: approximately January/February thru April/May

Application Deadline: December 1
You should receive notification by December 15

Summer: approximately late May/June thru August/September

Application Deadline: April 1
You should receive notification by April 15

Start and end dates are negotiable.

Deadlines that fall on a weekend or holiday are extended to the next business day.

If you need confirmation of an internship sooner than the posted notification date, please note that prominently in your application, along with the reason (i.e. because your college requires you to register for the course credits for the internship by an earlier deadline). We will make a reasonable effort to accommodate such requests, but we cannot guarantee a decision by an earlier date.

Also, we will consider shorter internships on a case-by-case basis. We often face a shortage of interns during the transition from one term to the next, when some students leave before their replacements arrive. During the months of May, August and September, and December and January, we frequently need help. If for some reason a full-semester or full-summer internship doesn't work for you, you may want to consider joining us during one of these periods.

One writing sample of 250 words or less unedited by others

The application and other requested materials must be submitted together. Failure to meet any of the above-mentioned requirements may delay, or even prevent, the further review of your application. Please keep a photocopy of your completed application for your files. Given the volume of incoming applications, we will not be able to return any of the materials we receive.

Internship Hours

GI-NET’s standard business hours are 8:30am – 5:00 pm, Monday thru Friday. Interns that can be available for 20-40 hours per week are preferred. In your cover letter, please specify the Internship period you are applying for (Fall, Winter/Spring or Summer); your preferred start and end dates; preferred hours; and the days and hours each week you are available.

Academic Credit

Awarding academic credit for an internship is at the discretion of your high school, college, or university. However, we will assist you in providing appropriate information as your school requests. You should make all arrangements for earning credit prior to the commencement of your internship.

Description of Internship Program

Through these internship opportunities you will gain hands-on experience in multiple areas of expertise. All the while, you will be making a significant difference in the lives of victims of genocide and assisting us as we continue to develop the first permanent anti-genocide constituency in the United States. Our interns become part of our team by working in one of our seven departments on various projects such as:

Helping to gathering information, whether from the Internet, from magazine, newspaper and journal articles about ongoing conflicts and areas of concern and/ or contacting researchers and other experts to ask questions.
Communicating with major media on issues and with the public via outreach efforts. Writing or co-authoring articles for print, fact sheets, press releases, briefing materials, and letters to Congress and the Executive branch; and prospective and current donors and foundations. Editing and assisting with our website, co-authoring reports, grant proposals, and journal articles.
Attending events on Capitol Hill and policy discussions with representatives from other non-profit think tanks and advocacy organizations
Assisting with fundraising activities, including event planning and other development issues.
Assisting the Executive Director and Operations staff with development of materials and information for board meetings; and performing day-to-day administrative tasks that help keep the organization running smoothly
Performing outreach to college campuses, students and young adults; and assisting Membership staff with the development of products and materials and performing outreach to our growing adult membership

This is an unpaid internship. GI-NET does not offer an Internship stipend. However, Interns receive $70 per month in SmartBenefits to cover local transportation costs. Lectures, panel discussions and other events are also frequently made available through allied organizations in the Darfur and anti-genocide movements.
