As I reflect on the past couple of years, both as a student and as a member of this organization, I have come to accept one overarching truth… anything worthwhile takes time. The biggest mistake we can make as a group is to rush head on into a world that none of us fully understand. The world I speak of is the world of politics.

As an 8-year-old, Augustino Ting Mayai didn’t ask God for a new bike, a homerun or an A on his spelling quiz. He asked God to keep him alive.

When his village in southern Sudan was attacked nearly 20 years ago, Mayai became one of thousands of young boys to flee their war-ridden homes and walk hundreds of miles to safety, many never to see their families again. As word spread about these young refugees, they soon became known internationally for their hardships as the “Lost Boys of Sudan.”

The relay, entitled Never Ignore, Never Forget, is an initiative of eight students from Wichita, Kansas to raise awareness of past and on-going genocides. The team left Wichita, KS on June 2, 2008 on a 1,300 mile course to Washington D.C. Averaging 104 miles daily, the team took only two weeks to reach the Capitol City. In addition to raising awareness of genocide, the group has also set a goal of $100,000 to aid the civilian protection program in Darfur, Sudan sponsored by the Genocide Intervention Network.

Our STAND Chapter at the University of Delaware won two awards at this years YoUDee awards ceremony.

We won Best New RSO (Registered Student Organization) out of 120 new RSOs who have been on campus for less than 2 years. As well, we won the Best RSO Lecture Award for Paul Rusesabagina's talk "Hotel Rwanda: A Lesson Yet to be Learned".

High school students organize 4-band event on April 11 for Darfur

"I know if I can save just one life, it makes all my time and effort worth it," said Zach Peirce, president of Mooresville High School's STAND, a Student Anti-Genocide Coalition chapter.

Peirce's counterpart, Colleen Jose, president of Lake Norman High School's STAND, agrees. "Our minds never turn off," said Jose. "There are a lot of battles out there, and we're choosing one we're passionate about."
