Over the past two years, we’ve been working day in and day out with our allies on the hill to write a comprehensive genocide prevention bill, based on the recommendation of experts outlined in the genocide prevention task force report, to mandate a better strategy and increased capacity for an effective response to genocide and mass atrocities from the US government. Originally, this year’s national anti-genocide conference was scheduled to push this bill forward and direct the movement’s energy toward a common goal and more coordinated efforts. Based on information we’ve received from members of Congress, however, the original timeline for the launch of the bill had to be pushed back to later this year.
In light of this information, we have decided to switch up our game plan and re-envision the conference, originally scheduled for April 16th-18th as a fall event. Our new game plan will give the movement more time to prepare for this unprecedented opportunity to make significant progress toward achieving a world without genocide and provide an even more powerful presence and event later in the year. As a movement of informed advocates, we aim to be steadfast in our mission, strategic in our efforts and dedicated to achieving the highest level of influence on those with the power to affect real world change.
Once the bill drops, we will need a visible groundswell of support to leverage in Congress and a more innovative national event in the fall aimed toward racking up co-sponsors and making our voices heard about genocide prevention and ending ongoing conflicts that threaten civilians from Darfur, Sudan to Libya. This was not an easy decision to come to, however, we wanted to respect your time, energy and resources and be realistic about the opportunity we have to be even more valuable to the cause in the fall. The upcoming genocide prevention bill offers our movement an opportunity we cannot afford to miss out on and hope we can continue to work together to lay the groundwork now for genocide prevention. In place of the conference on April 16th and 17th we are instead offering for the first time on this level an intensive, high quality training for anti-genocide activists.
