Sound the Alarm on Syria!

Call 1-800-Genocide and tell your Senators to co-sponsor the Syria Sanctions Act of 2011. Urge your elected officials to support civilan protection in Syria.

Over the years our movement has stood together in unwavering support of the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities around the world. And over the years our movement has encountered many successes. In Sudan, we saw our administration take greater accountability in the CPA implementation and referendum process. Just last year in South Sudan, through calls to 1-800-GENOCIDE and grassroots organizing from students like you, the Obama administration mobilized an unprecedented effort to prevent mass atrocities. And even more recently, students rallied together last minute to advocate for the “responsibility to protect” in Libya--proving to be a success for civilian protection in the region. We must continue to remind ourselves of our successes and the strength of our voice as we move forward in our mission.

This fall we asked you to Sound the Alarm on genocide prevention by telling our administration to stop pressing snooze on atrocities occurring around the world. You sounded the alarm on Sudan when you made your banner and called 1-800-GENOCIDE telling our administration to keep Sudan a priority as violence continues. Now we’re asking you to Sound the Alarm for the people of Syria.

Join us in our campaign to Sound the Alarm on Syria. More than seven months ago, the Syrian people rallied together to peacefully protest the Bashar al-Assad regime for democratic reforms. These peaceful protests, however, were met with violent government crackdowns. Most recent reports from human rights groups have numbered civilian deaths at 5,000 and government arrests at 12,000. The Assad regime has faced pressure from the international community to cede power, including denouncements of violence from allies such as Turkey and Iran.

Educate.

Our campaign calls upon you to mobilize your communities in support of civilian protection in Syria. Use the tools and resources we’ve provided to educate your constituencies so that they are better equipped to take action! Show your support and spread awareness by holding an event in your community. Whether it be a solidarity rally or a speaker on your campus, mobilize students, family, and friends to join our movement. We’ll help you along the way, providing you with resources, such as one pagers, weekly updates on the situation on the ground, and regional conference calls to answer any questions you may have.

Advocate.

In the second phase of our campaign we will ask you to organize your communities to advocate for the Syria Sanctions Act of 2011. This legislation establishes penalties within the US for any company — domestic or international — that continues to participate in Syria’s petroleum sector.  Tell you Senator to support civilian protection in Syria by co-sponsoring this bill. We will help you mobilize support through a national call-in day, letter writing campaign, and online lobby trainings. Use our resources to call, write, and lobby your Senators to co-sponsor this bill!
