Transition Rally

NSC 2008

Join us at the rally to STAND up for a renewed commitment from our government to act in the face of atrocity and STAND out loud in the face of apathy as we continue to fight to make our vision of a world free from genocide a reality!

When:

STAND's Transition Rally will kick off at 3pm on Friday, November 7th, the day before the National Student Conference officially begins.

Where:

We are gathering on the National Mall at 2:30pm on the corner of 17th St. and Constitution Ave. NW and will start marching to the location a few blocks away and rallying around 3.  If you would like to make posters with us beforehand, meet us on the mall around 2:00. The rally will end around 4:00 pm.

Why:

With the presidential election taking place only days before the conference, we have an unprecedented opportunity to guarantee the next leader of our country takes a strong stance against genocide. Both candidates have made concrete promises to do everything in their power to bring the genocide in Darfur to an end, and it is our responsibility to ensure those promises are fulfilled, not just Sudan, but around the world and that the new President takes effective action immediately.

This November, we have a chance to put Darfur at the top of the priority list for the incoming administration as the President-elect gears up for the first 100 days of his term. As the newly elected President prepares for the first few months of office, a transition team is hired for the time leading up to the inauguration and put into place by the General Services Administration, with the incoming and outgoing President. This team is tasked with ensuring the White House and Congress have the necessary resources to continue to function effectively and prepare for the upcoming year while power is transferring hands. This crucial period helps define a presidency and the administration. In this phase, the transition team plays a vital role in helping the President-elect prepare his policy agenda to present to Congress, and we play a vital role in ensuring the agenda reflects the promises made to end the conflict in Sudan.

Be the first to tell the Transition Team that ending genocide must be at the top of that agenda. To make our voices heard, we will gather outside the Transition Team's office only days after the election and tell the new administration what actions they and the President must take in the first 100 days of his term and beyond to bring the suffering in Sudan to an end and prevent similar atrocities from occurring in the future.

Join us at the rally to STAND up for a renewed commitment from our government to act in the face of atrocity and STAND out loud in the face of apathy as we continue to fight to make our vision of a world free from genocide a reality!

More Details:

Due to permit regulations, there is a good chance we will have to be in constant movement, so wear shoes you can walk in. Feel free to make posters emphasizing the need for immediate action in Sudan by the new administration. Creative slogans are encouraged. If you need ideas, we’ll be posting our asks on the site in the coming weeks. For students in DC, STAND will host an in-house poster making session at GW the week before on Sunday, November 2 from 6-9 PM. If you are interested in attending, please email info@standnow.org for more details.

Can't attend the rally but still want to STAND out loud?

You can still make your voice heard by participating in the Add Your Voice campaign which aims to collect one million postcards addressed to the new administration urging them to make Darfur a Day One priority.
