Day 50 - March 10

Fax a progress report to Obama via the internet!

On President Obama's first day in the White House, we bombarded his office with faxes outlining the steps he must take to fight genocide in his administration's first 100 days.

On Obama's 25th day, we flooded the State Department's phone lines with calls demanding that Clinton make Darfur a priority by appointing a new Special Envoy to Sudan.

And we're only getting started.

On the 50th day of President Obama's administration, get ready to flood the White House's fax lines by faxing the President his progress report on Darfur via the internet.

We've heard Obama's promises to work tirelessly against the genocide in Darfur. But words are not enough. Send your fax to Obama over the internet on Day 50.

This action will take place in several steps:

Today you can:

1) Write a letter to your members of Congress and ask them to write a letter to President Obama. This letter should ask him to complete the policy review and do all he can to get the humanitarian aid groups back in Sudan that had been previously expelled. Click Here to download a sample letter.

On Day 75, GW STAND will hand-deliver your letter to your members of Congress that you wrote.

2) Schedule a lobby meeting with your member of Congress during April 6-17, the congressional recess. Click here to learn how to set up a lobby meeting, and email advocacy@standnow.org with any questions. Check the calendar for lobby training calls that will be scheduled.

On April 3rd:

As your letter is being delivered, you can make a wake up call to congress.

3) On April 3rd, Day 75, call your members of Congress, tell them that they will receive a hand-delivered letter, and ask that your member of Congress write a letter to President Obama, asking him to end the policy review on Sudan soon and do all he can to get the humanitarian aid groups back in Sudan.

  • Call 1-800-GENOCIDE (1-800-436-6243) and punch in your zipcode to speak to your Representative. Then, call your two senators to deliver the same message. You can look up their phone numbers by visiting congress.org , entering your zipcode, and clicking on your senators.
  • Below is a sample script for your phone call. You will most likely speak with a staffer or an intern. You will also be given talking points before 1-800-GENOCIDE connects you to your Representative’s office.

“Hello, my name is Maggie and I’m a resident of Smalltown, New York, and a member of STAND, the student-led division of the Genocide Intervention Network. I’m calling to let the Representative know that s/he needs to do all s/he can to urge Obama to reverse the expulsion of aid groups from Darfur and to finish the Sudan policy review as quickly as possible.
    Thank you."

They might ask you for your full name and contact information in order to enable the office to respond to your concerns.
  • If you wrote a letter and sent it to GW to have it delivered, mention this in your phone call.
