In recent years, policy makers, activists and tech companies alike have attempted to take forward steps to eliminate conflict minerals like tin, tantalum and tungsten. A survey from the International Peace Information Service, followed by Enough Project investigations, found that armed groups are no longer found in two-thirds of Congo’s tin, tantalum and tungsten mines. According to U.N. investigations, $400 million in artisanally mined gold was smuggled out of Congo last year.
